Oh! My Sweet Liar! (2020) the best drama you have yet to watch

Okay, this is my second time watching this drama! Therefore, it made the cut. I love this drama; it’s sweet, funny, and overall a great watch! Did I mention our male lead is a general, and our female lead is an undercover artist. TRUST ME…THERE’S MORE! And so much romance 🙂

About the Drama:

Xiong Xi Rou (Xi Zi) is the adopted daughter of an art pavilion madam. She’s also an in-demand artist that has remained anonymous and is wanted for her scandalous artwork. A mix up ensures when an old friend contacts her for a portrait. Xiong Xi believes the offer to be a simple task when in reality, it’s the opposite. She enters the house of general Li Hong Bin (Xia Ning Jun), a bachelor who just returned from battle. Upon seeing who she has to “draw,” she decided to leave as she remembers the rumors of him being a heartless and cruel man. Long story short, Xi Rou ends up as his helper and paints him. Just then, she accidentally poisons herself and ends up lying next to Hong Bin. When Xi Rou wakes up, she makes up a lie to save her life. She is pregnant! And cannot be killed, and there is the start to many many lies and eventually love. But lies are always hard to keep, and thus they must cover their tracks. Yet all secrets begin to unravel.

Why I love this drama:

Usually, I’m not too fond of dramas about lies, but this drama plays them so well. It’s never genuinely intentional but more life and death. And it becomes hard to be truthful when the lies told will end up hurting someone. It’s honestly hilarious; It’s very lighthearted. I think the worst part of this drama is the second female lead. She is rotten to the core, and what she does to Xi Rou makes the lies seem like child’s play. But, I will say it makes for a great plot. This drama will have you laughing, crying, and wishing for a boo. The characters are likable and flawed. No one is perfect, yet no one is evil, well, not the leads. Did I mention the family is actually normal and not evil or unfair like in most dramas? It’s just a fresh breath of air. And the plot that comes from this drama is crazy considering how light it’s made to be. It’s a perfect balance. It’s one of the best dramas in 2020, next to Love and Redemption( 2020 review coming soon).

The Relationship of Xi Rou and Hong Bin:

Let’s start by saying it’s very aggressive. At the start, Hong Bin is rough with her. I mean it, it’s baffling! The things she endured are beyond me. But the lies she pulled kept her alive long enough to make him melt. He’s a brick wall while she’s a ray of sunshine, so he falls fast, in my opinion. There’s teasing and some push-in pull throughout their romance. The lies at that point are useless as he’s in love. Nothing could keep him apart from her, even when he found out the truth. He went from a cold man to the sweetest loving, supporting partner ever! And Xi Rou, I love her! She is so sneaky, intelligent, yet aloof. She is hilarious. Of course, her biggest flaw is her constant lying and trying to run away from what she created. It took her some time to warm up to Hong Bin, which is not surprising as he hid his feelings for a long time. Xi Rou is oblivious when it comes to love. Anyways when they BOTH are in love, there’s so much harmony, support, and love between the two. The chemistry is incomparable. It’s hard not to root for them. I, for one, love their dynamic and wish we could see another drama like this!

The gradual love between the leads:

I love how as the show progresses, we see the love. It all starts to unravel slowly, but it’s intense. Xi Rou has always been protective of Hong Bin. Even before she knew she loved him. She was always making sure he was okay and never let anyone hurt him. She often put herself in harm’s way. She has a sharp tongue and heavily criticizes Hong Bin, but her actions are genuine. And she is always cuddling him and trying to make him happy. I rarely see a female lead like her that shows so much affection and is very playful yet fierce. She’s a strong character with a lot of wits. Hong Bin fell in love first as he saw all her care towards him. Even when it had no meaning, he often called her out and pointed out her lies. Yet he covered for her every time. Hong Bin could not stand to see her sad. He would do anything to protect her and their love. He even started making up lies to keep them together because he knew she was the only one for him. Hong Bin risked a lot of his life to ensure they could stay together. I love their relationship and how the drama portrays their love story and struggle.

The cinematography:

Okay, this drama is epic in terms of shots. It’s so beautiful! I love the angles and the costumes. The hair and jewelry are beautiful. I love the color schemes. Truly easy on the eyes with breathtaking backdrops. There is natural lighting and subtle darkness. 9.5/10 overall.

What are the lies?

1st lie is she’s a male helper. 2nd lie is she slept with Hong Bin. 3rd lie is she’s pregnant. 4th lie that Hong Bin and Xi Rou come up with is her “prestigious” background. 5th lie is that Hong Bin and Xi Rou are madly in love, so they must marry, plus she’s pregnant. 6th lie is that Hong Bin went into the forbidden area when it was Xi Rou. 7th  and 8th Lie is that Xi Rou lost her baby twice due to someone else fault ( which she backtracks from guilt). Im trying to remember if there is more. I am sure there is, or I missed some. It’s a lot but trust me; she’s a redeemable character.

Last thoughts:

You need to watch this drama. It’s on youtube fully subbed. Their chemistry is fire, and the drama is excellent overall. I highly recommend it if you want a good dramatic rom-com. How they have time for all the comedy is a mystery to me, but it’s my favorite aspect of this drama. The acting is excellent, which is such a plus! They are new actors, but they delivered a hell of a show. And I hope to see everyone in another drama together. This cast is perfect. The writers and directors all did a fantastic job—one of the best dramas I have ever watched.
